Desert Healthcare District & Foundation
Mobile Medical Clinic Program
Hundreds of deployments of the Desert Healthcare District & Foundation’s mobile medical clinic have enabled thousands of Coachella Valley residents to access healthcare since it was launched in January 2023.
In May 2021, the District & Foundation Board approved an allocation of $336,500 to purchase a 26-foot mobile clinic. The vehicle includes two examination rooms, a full bathroom, and other amenities that accommodate many medical services, ranging from vaccination administration to various health screenings.
The acquisition of the mobile clinic was supported by Growing Coachella Valley and by a generous $175,000 grant from the Coachella Valley Resource Conservation District.
Licensed and operated by Desert Physicians Medical Group (DPMG Health), the mobile clinic has delivered healthcare services to vulnerable valley communities. Working closely with Alejandro Espinoza, Desert Healthcare District & Foundation Chief of Community Engagement, DMPG Health regularly visits farm fields, church and school parking lots, homeless encampments, and other locations across the valley.
Another benefit of the mobile clinic is the real-world education and experience it provides to medical students, medical residents and nursing students who work alongside professional medical personnel to deliver care.
“We realized early on that the mobile clinic would be an integral part of District outreach,” said Chris Christensen, Desert Healthcare District & Foundation CEO. “Seven months after its first deployment, our Board decided to purchase a second mobile clinic to expand upon and add services.”
The second clinic consists of a state-of-the-art detachable trailer and a pickup truck to transport it. Unveiled in May 2024, it provides behavioral health counseling and a pharmacy — a more comprehensive approach to care.
About the Desert Healthcare District & Foundation
The Desert Healthcare District is a local government agency formed in 1948. Its mission is to achieve optimal health at all stages of life for all District residents. The District includes more than 400,000 residents and encompasses the entire Coachella Valley. The District and Desert Healthcare Foundation, together, are one of the largest funders in the valley. These funds are used to assist residents — especially the underserved — in accessing vitally needed resources, such as primary and behavioral healthcare.
