Healthcare District summit shifts focus from environment to 4 social determinants of health
Dear Coachella Valley Residents and Community Partners,
On behalf of the Desert Healthcare District & Foundation Board of Directors and staff, I am pleased to invite you to join us for the Third Annual Healthy Desert, Healthy You Summit on September 10.
This year’s summit marks an important evolution in our community conversation about health and well-being. In previous years, the summit focused on environmental health and the ways our surroundings affect our health and quality of life. While that work remains important, we have heard clearly from community partners, residents and other stakeholders that some of the most pressing health
challenges facing our valley today extend beyond traditional healthcare and environmental concerns.
That is why this year’s summit will focus on four critical social determinants of health: healthcare access, behavioral health, workforce development, and housing.
Research consistently shows that health is shaped by far more than medical care alone. The stability of our housing, availability of a sufficient healthcare workforce, access to mental and behavioral health services, and the ability to obtain timely healthcare all influence whether individuals and families can thrive. These factors affect not only personal well-being, but also the strength, resilience, and prosperity of our entire community.
The challenges associated with these issues are complex, and no single organization can solve them alone. Meaningful progress requires collaboration across sectors and disciplines, with the District & Foundation’s leadership and support. It requires healthcare professionals working alongside nonprofit leaders. It requires business leaders partnering with educators, public agencies, and community advocates. Most importantly, it requires residents sharing their experiences, insights, and ideas.
The Healthy Desert, Healthy You Summit is designed to create that opportunity.
This gathering, offered free to the public, is not simply about discussing challenges. It is about identifying solutions. Together, we will explore innovative approaches, learn from experts and community practitioners, and identify opportunities for partnership and collective action. By bringing diverse voices to the table, we can better understand the needs of our region and develop strategies that reflect the realities of the communities we serve.
The Desert Healthcare District & Foundation believes that a healthier community begins with shared responsibility and shared vision. By working together to address the social conditions that influence health, we can help create a future in which every resident has the opportunity to live a healthy, productive, and fulfilling life.
We invite you to join us on Sept. 10 at the Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort and Spa in Rancho Mirage as we continue building a healthier and resilient Coachella Valley — together.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Barraza, Board President
